checking in: the sherwood, queenstown

'Be Here Now' is the mantra of Queenstown's coolest hotel, the Sherwood.

Set in three acres of alpine hillside overlooking Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables, it's a paradise of breathtaking views, organic homegrown food, and a range of happenings including yoga, intimate gigs, and more. This former motor-inn is the place to unwind after a day sightseeing or on the slopes.

The Sherwood takes great pride in Kiwi craftsmanship, an element I love. Poster artwork by New Zealand artist and filmmaker Joel Kefali (who's worked with the likes of Tune-Yards and LCD Soundsystem) hangs in each room, the beds are made from sustainable local timber,  and when it comes to the grub, the produce is foraged from all over Central Otago.

Community here trumps over luxury; relaxation over the burnout of the bustling city; forward-thinking defines it – it's not surprising that the Sherwood boasts New Zealand's biggest private solar panel installation.

I stayed in the Lodge Queen Room, and from my first steps into the curated space I felt myself instantly relax. Everything from the scent, to the sounds, to the furnishings had been heavily considered with cosiness at its centre.

And when the new day breaks, happiness is seeing the long white clouds framing the mountains. Oh, how I wish I could forever see that view.

The Sherwood / Rates from $175 NZD
